Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is a standard that allows learning platforms to connect securely with external tools and content. Using LTI, you can launch external learning activities from within our platform, or make your own content available in another platform.

There are two main versions: LTI 1.1 and LTI 1.3. In each version, you can:

  • Use LTI to bring external content into our platform

  • Set up remote LTI so your content on our platform appears in an external platform

Tip! πŸ’‘

We advice to use the LTI 1.3 version if the external content provider supports both 1.1 and 1.3 versions.

How does a LTI activity work?

When learners click on the activity that is linked to an external provider, the platform uses the LTI settings to launch the URL of the externally hosted tool.

The process includes automated verification and a secure launch, so learners can start immediately without extra logins.

This method allows a secure data transfer. The data can include:

  1. User information (such as first name, last name, and email)

  2. Course completion status

  3. Grades

πŸ’‘ Why LTI is useful

  • Seamless access to external tools from within your platform

  • Secure sharing of learner data for tracking and reporting

  • Flexibility to use or share content across different platforms
