This feature helps you clearly differentiate what learners must complete (core) from what they can do optionally (at their own pace). It's particularly useful for managers to define what counts toward key performance indicators (KPIs) versus what supports broader, more holistic learning.

Enable the feature in Control

Navigate to: Control > Settings > Features > Content management & delivery

Find the setting called Optional content and enable it by ticking the checkbox.

This feature allows admins to define which activities are optional to complete. Once activated, user progress can be filtered to include or exclude optional content, helping managers better track KPI-related content vs. other types/optional learning.

Mark content as optional using automations

By default, all content is set as core.

To define optional content:

  1. Navigate to Control > Behaviour > Automations

  2. In the automation, under Action, when selecting to Unlock activity or Unlock journey/section, tick the Optional checkbox

  3. To define something as core, simply leave the checkbox unticked

You can select multiple activities or journeys at once and apply the Optional checkbox. This setting will apply to all selected items in that action, which is useful for managing content types in bulk.

💡 Tip:

You can create multiple automation rules: some core and some optional to structure your learning pathways flexibly.

Filter and report on core vs. optional content

Once the feature is enabled, both managers and learners can filter content by type.

For managers:

  • Go to More > Reporting

  • Use the filter Core/Optional Content to view completion data by content type

For learners:

  • Go to More > My Progress

  • Filter learning progress by Core, Optional, or All

Style optional content visually

Optional activities won’t look different unless one of the following styling options is enabled by a developer (submit service request for this):

  • Optional tag: A visual label using the platform’s secondary colour

  • Dotted checkmark: Appears on a tile regardless of progress, indicating the activity is not required for completion

Only one styling option can be applied at a time.
