Once you add a widget to the stream, you still need to set up an automation that makes it visible to the right learners. In this article, you will create an automation directly from the widget.

Learning objectives

By the end of this article, you will be able to:

  1. Create an automation linked to a widget

  2. Apply the best practice method for setting up widget automations

  3. Understand the alternative method and when you might use it

Method 1: Best practice (recommended)

The easiest way to create a widget automation is directly from the widget in the stream.

  1. Go to Behaviour > Stream.

  2. Click the + button next to the widget you want to unlock.

  3. The platform will automatically:

    • Add a clear automation name

    • Pre-select the event type

  4. After clicking on "save":

    • The action will already be pre-filled (Unlock widget: [Name of widget])

  5. you only need to:

    • Add the Condition (for example: Is group โ†’ Belgium)

  6. Click Save and enable the automation.

๐Ÿ’ก Why this is best practice:

The action is pre-filled, and the automation is already linked to the correct widget. This reduces errors and saves time.

Method 2: Alternative option

You can also create a widget automation through the widget settings.

  1. Go to Behaviour > Stream.

  2. Click on the widget you want to unlock (for example: Module 1 โ€“ Belgium).

  3. Scroll down to the Applied automations box

  4. Click Create automation.

  5. You will be redirected to Behaviour > Automations.

  6. From here, click + Create automation and set it up manually:

    • Add a title

    • Choose the Event type

    • Add the Condition

    • Add the Action: Unlock widget [Name of widget]

  7. Save and enable the automation.

โš ๏ธ Important:

This option requires you to add the action yourself. If you forget to select โ€œUnlock widget,โ€ the automation will not work.

Recap

You now know two ways to create a widget automation:

  • Best practice: use the + button next to the widget in the stream (faster and less error-prone)

  • Alternative: use the Applied automations box in the widget settings (requires more manual setup)

Both methods unlock the widget, but you still need a second automation to unlock the content inside the widget.
